‘The Crank’ not taking new foe lightly

Frank “The Crank” Camacho is leaving no room for complacency even if he will be facing a relatively newcomer in Xtreme Combat’s Gun Hwan Park in next month’s Rites of Passage 21: Throwdown.

“I will approach this fight the same way I approached my previous bouts. I am having my usual preparation, getting the gym time in, drilling, and conditioning. The beauty of martial arts is not only the constant growth but also the constant search for ‘yourself.’ I need to bring back to old Crank and combine him with better fight IQ and wisdom,” said Camacho, who will be up against a new opponent as his rematch with Hyun Joo Kim did not materialize after the Korean got a better offer to fight in Japan the same weekend ROP 21 is scheduled.

Camacho and Kim met in ROP 20: Conquer in August last year with the Trench Tech bet earning a TKO win at the 3:17 mark of the opening round of their five-round bout after peppering the latter with powerful strikes.

Taking the place of Kim was his compatriot, who just started seeing action in the octagon cage in 2015. Despite his limited experience, Park boasts an impressive record of 3-1. The 6’1” Korean won his debut on the eight sides after stopping Kan Hosa via TKO (punches) at the 2:39 mark of Round 1 of their welterweight duel in Wardog Cage Fight 4 last May 31, 2015. Park then fell (TKO/punches) to fellow Korean Yul Kim in Top FC 11 in May 2016, but bounced back with two straight victories in the same Top FC event. In Top FC Dream 1, Park used a rear-naked choke on Dae Sun Hwang to get the win just 25 seconds into the fight. For his third and latest win, Park edged (unanimous decision) Jae Young Ahn in Top FC 14 in May this year.

The Korean’s strong start in his young MMA career plus his eagerness to put on a great show in his debut on Saipan in front of the partisan crowd would make Park a tough opponent, according to Camacho.

“At the end of the day, this dude is going try to whoop me up and finish me in front of my home island. He is going be behind enemy lines, I know that, and that can make opponents like him very dangerous,” said the 27-year-old fighter.

Camacho will put his 19-4 record on the line when he square off against Park in the main event of the May 26 competition that will be held at the Marianas Business Plaza’s parking lot.

Park will be the fourth Korean to challenge Camacho, who holds a 2-1 record against the former’s compatriots. Besides beating Hyun Joo Kim last year, Camacho also downed Jae Woong Kim (arm triangle choke) in the first round (4:38) of their bout in Trench Warz 18: Rock and Rumble in December 2014. Camacho’s lone loss to a Korean was courtesy of Han Seul Kim, who registered a TKO win in the first round of their match in PXC 54 in July last year.

Meanwhile, Camacho will warm-up for his anticipated clash against Park by joining the Marianas Open 2017 (grappling and submission competition) that will take place at the end of the month.

The CNMI Girls U15 National Team is down to one game and is aiming for a strong finish as it faces Mongolia in the EAFF U15 Girls Tournament 2017 today at the Jinshan Sports Center in Shanghai, China.

“We will be playing against Mongolia for our last game. It is likely that they are a fairly new team. Because of this and now that the girls are accustomed to the weather here, the coaches are anticipating a good game. We will continue to encourage the girls to do their best and make our island proud,” said team manager Mikky Vargas in an email sent to Saipan Tribune a day after the squad dropped its second straight match, losing to Pool C favorite Chinese-Taipei, 0-8.

The Commonwealth bets played against their counterparts on Chinese-Taipei last Tuesday and though the former yielded eight goals—one more than they allowed in their debut loss to Jinshan—the Luen Khen Koo-coached squad showed some improvements and were a bit accustomed to playing under the cold weather.

“They are getting used to the briskness of the air. Many of them had difficulty breathing during their first match and our fitness suffered a great deal. During this game however, it was much easier on the girls,” Vargas said.

“On the defensive end, we were a lot more organized, compact, and disciplined than we were against Jinshan. We lost some goals because of our fitness. The girls would lose discipline and concentration when they are tired. Overall, the coaches believed that they played much better in this game,” said the team manager, adding that a few of their players are injured, but they still decided to play some minutes.

Patricia Surima suffered an injury while playing defense, as she tried to block a cross from Chinese-Taipei. She is recovering well and has expressed her willingness to play against Mongolia.

“The coaches understand the difficulty of playing three games in five days. They are trying their best to give everyone the time they need to recover for the last game,” Vargas said.

No leads are safe in the batting races in the Majors and Junior League divisions of the 2017 Saipan Little League Baseball.

The Little Legals’ Gunner Sablan is on top of the batting charts (updated statistics as of April 2) with his average of .625, but not far behind are McDonald’s Lushawn Reyes (.620) and the former’s teammate Delbert Sablan (.607). Sablan has the best average so far among the 20 leaders after going 15-for-24, while Reyes and Delbert went 18-for-29 and 17-for-28, respectively.

Two other players are also still in the hunt for the top honors in the batting contest as the Little Legals’ Kaipo Dikito and the Braves’ Joel Borja have similar averages of .500. Dikito hit 14-for-28, while Borja was 9-for-18 at bat.

Rounding out the Top 20, which was based on 18 or more times at bat) were McDonald’s Joseph Ada (.462), Bank of Saipan’s Jequinn Lizama (.450), the Braves’ Patrick Celis (.450), Pirates 2’s Easton Dela Cruz (.444), Bank of Saipan’s Anton Aguon (.434), McDonald’s Joel Deleon Guerrero (.428), the Falcons’ Keoni Serrano (.423), Pirates 2’s Ryder Alvarez (.421), Pirates 2’s Jeremiah Suel III (.421), the Braves’ taisei Desebel (.409), the Little Legals’ Lucio Aldan (.407), Bank of Saipan’s Isidro Lizama (.400), the Braves’ Heath Camacho (.391), Pirates 2’s Deondrey Cruz (.388), and Pirates 1’s Kazu Dela Cruz (.388).

There were no games in the Majors division last week and action at the Miguel “Tan Ge” Basa Pangelinan Ballfield will resume this Saturday with players in the Top 20 needing to perform better as the league is past its halfway mark. The 10 teams in the division will play 12 games in the regular season and majority of them had already completed at least eight games each.

In the pitching race, the Top 3 are also in a close fight with leader Jason Reyes holding a 0.35 ERA against the 0.46 of Delbert Sablan and 0.66 of Isidro Lizama. Serrano and Gunner Sablan are ranked fourth and fifth with their 1.00 and 1.33 ERA, respectively.

Anthony Acosta is out of the Top 5 in the pitching race, but is on top of the strikeouts category with 53, 10 more than Serrano’s output. Reyes has 37 so far, while Isidro Lizama has earned 35. In the most runs, Lushawnn Reyes and Delbert Sablan have 20 each for the tie. There are also deadlocks in the most RBIs with Joseph Ada and Delbert Sablan having 12 and in the most triples between Gunner Sablan and Kazu Dela Cruz, who have three apiece. Ada and Delbert Sablan have the solo lead in the doubles (seven) and homers (three), respectively.

Meanwhile, in the Junior League division, the Braves’ Vicente Camacho went 12-for-24 for an average of .500, but a lot of batters could still catch up or slip past him.

They include his teammate Leve’Que Iguel and the Falcons’ Nixon Smith, who recorded similar batting averages of .473, the Enforcers’ Thomas Agulto (.458), the Braves’ Josenio Alvarez (.454) and JP Celis (.440), the Ol’Aces Trevor Lieto (.428), the Falcons’ Froilan Camacho (.428), the Enforcers’ Sean Rabauliman (.428), and the Comets’ Sab Saures (.416), and A.J Sanchez (.416). Nine other batters made it to the leaderboard after averaging over .300.

Camacho is also No. 1 in the pitching contest, but his 0.58 ERA is not way ahead of the 0.77 of the Falcons’ Joel Norita and the 0.95 of Celis. Aven Evangelista is ranked fourth in the pitching race with with 1.07 ERA.

In other categories, Saures and Alvarez are tied in the most doubles scored with four apiece, while Camacho is in a three-way logjam for the lead in triples with Agulto and Lieto matching the latter’s two. Sanchez and Froilan Camacho are in a standoff in the RBIs division with seven each, while Celis and Evangelista lead in the strikeouts (32) and runs scored (15), respectively. In the homers category, only Froilan Camacho and Tarrence Babauta have circled the bases and they did in only once.

This year’s Tagaman Triathlon will be held on June 24 and will feature a new course.

The road triathlon, which is usually held either in March or April as part of Saipan Sportsfest along with XTERRA Saipan and Saipan Marathon, will move its 1.5K swim leg to the waters of Kanoa Resort (official Tagaman Triathlon hotel) in Susupe from Pacific Islands Club in San Antonio. For the swim-bike and bike-run transitions, participants will have to go to Minatchom Atdao Pavilion. The bike run transition in the past Tagaman was located at the American Memorial Park.

From the pavilion, triathletes will head north up to Banzai Cliff and back to Minatchom Atdao for the 40K bike leg, while the 10K run portion will have its turnaround near the Chamolinian Utt in Garapan.

Registration is now open with an early bird fee of $125. Entrance fees turned in after May 10 will be $150 and the fees are the same for the individual and team participants. Cash prizes await the Top 3 finishers in the women’s and men’s open categories. Entry forms are available online at www.saipantriathlon.com.

Ricky Castro of the Triathlon Association of the CNMI, which is working with Northern Mariana Islands Cycling Federation in helping Marianas Visitors Authority handle this year’s Tagaman, said at this early, some Guam triathletes have expressed interest in joining the competition. Castro is hoping to surpass last year’s turnout (120) as TRAC and NMICF reach out to both on-island and off-island athletes. The TRAC official will go the Philippines next week to watch a triathlon event and encourage triathletes to try Tagaman Triathlon.

“Tagaman is one of the oldest, if not the oldest, triathlon events in the Pacific and the CNMI triathlon community hopes to keep the competition running by bringing in more off-island participants,” Castro said.

Aquathlon/10K run tomorrow

Meanwhile, TRAC is hosting a pre-Tagaman Triathlon event this weekend with the staging of the 2nd Aquathlon/10K Run.

The aquathlon will feature a 2.5K run, 1K swim, and 2.5K run with the swim leg to be held in the waters near the submerged World War II tanks in Susupe and the run leg turnaround across the Saipan Mayor’s Office along Beach Road. For the 10K run, participants will leave the Kilili Beach and head north all the way to Bank of Guam (across) and back to the start line.

Registration is only $10 and go time is at 6:30am.

This weekend’s event is supported by Kanoa Resort, Islander CarRental, Ecosure Insurance, Sand Castle Saipan, NMICF Let’s Go Tour, Fiesta Resort & Spa, and PIC-Saipan.

Ali’i/Blue Haus prevailed in the battle of undefeated teams after edging Stephen’s Pawnshop, 92-85, in the first game in the 2017 San Antonio Summer Basketball League last Wednesday at the San Antonio court.

Angelo Fernando and Lerio Pagarao hit timely baskets in the fourth quarter and Ali’i/Blue Haus also knocked in clutch free throws to take the 7-point win and extend the team’s streak to four. Stephen’s Pawnshop absorbed its first loss after four matches.

Fernando and Pagarao were among the double figurer scorers for Ali’i/Blue Haus as the former earned 13 points, 6 of them came in the final canto, while the latter had 4 of his 10 markers in the payoff frame. Elmer Esdrelon led Ali’i/Blue Haus’ balance scoring with his 14 markers, while Brendon Talania and Marlon De Dios chipped in 11 each, and Darwin Barbo contributed 10.

Stephen’s Pawnshop also had multiple players breaking into twin digits, but just could not slip past Ali’i/Blue Haus in the second half after going neck-and-neck with the eventual winner in the first 20 minutes of play.

The first half ended with Ali’i/Blue Haus holding a shaky lead, 50-49, while the opposing teams were even after the opening canto, 23-23. Ali’i/Blue Haus then gained more cushion in the third canto, 75-70, thanks to the combined 13 points of Talania and Esdrelon. Then in the fourth canto, it was the turn of Pagarao and Fernando to join forces in keeping Ali’i/Blue Haus in the driver’s seat against the young guns of Stephen’s Pawnshop, which played without Douglas Schmidt.

Meanwhile, Frank Ferrer fired 27 points, while Sid Quan chipped in 15 to lift Cuadro PS to victory against Kagman.

The nightcap was also a close game, but Cuadro PS prevailed in the end, thanks to its Top 2 scorers. Ferrer and Quan registered all of Cuadro PS’ points in the fourth quarter to cancel out the successive baskets of Trevor Ogumoro for Kagman.

In other results this week, Arianne Fish Mart and United Ballers posted contrasting wins last Monday. United Ballers pulled off a 70-67 triumph over Bolleros, while Arianne eased past Sweep Waters, 115-91.

Ol’Aces Elite, Ol’Aces triumph

The Ol’Aces Elite notched twin wins this week, while its sister team the Ol’Aces also prevailed in the boys U18 division of the 2017 Francisco M. Diaz Memorial Youth League.

The Ol’Aces Elite first topped Mt. Carmel School, 52-43, last Tuesday at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium and then outclassed the Sonics XVIII in last Wednesday’s curtain-raiser, 42-34, while the Ol’Aces romped past the Natibu Warriors in the second match, 60-33.

The Ol’Aces set up the easy win after pulling away in the second half and drawing contributions from multiple players. The second half start with the Ol’Aces ahead by 10, 20-10, but it padded its lead with N-Nes Siech anchoring the breakaway. Siech dropped 9 of his 11 points in the final half, while Jeff Castro also stepped up in that canto after scoring 7 markers.

Five other Ol’Aces players chipped in at least 5 points apiece in the team’s easy victory. Henry Aguon paced the Natibu Warriors with his 8 points, but these were way behind the 26 markers he drilled in their 104-33 rout of Agape Christian School last Monday.

In the first game last Wednesday, the Ol’Aces Elite also spread the wealth to beat the Sonics XVIII.

No Ol’Aces Elite player broke into double figures, but four combined for more than half of the team’s total output with E.J. Abejo and Renato Gaviola tallying 9 points each and Rikko Saralu and Traven Quitugua adding 7 apiece. Two more Ol’Aces Elite players made it to the squad’s box scores.

In contrast, only four hit the board for the Sonics XVIII and Roberto Paragados carried most of the load for the losing team after firing 18 points.

The Ol’ Aces Elite led from start to finish against Sonics XVIII.

Versus Mt. Carmel, the Ol’Aces Elite recovered from an 8-point deficit midway in the first half to steal the victory from the Knights.

Capitalizing on the Ol’Aces Elite’s failure to quickly get back on defense, Mt. Carmel managed to take a 22-14 advantage at the halfway mark of the first half after getting away with a couple of fastbreak layups.

The Ol’Aces Elite sued for time and when the game resumed, it regrouped and forced the Knights to commit errors and turned them into baskets. The Ol’Aces Elite’s recovery moved the team within 3 at halftime, 22-25.

The Knights eventually lost the lead in the second half, no thanks to Xavier Okaruru’s 4 straight baskets and his teammates’ support. Mt. Carmel could not keep the driver’s seat as it was held to five field goals in the second half, while the Ol’Aces Elite hit more targets.

TUESDAY
Ol’Aces Elite 52 — Okaruru 12, Elchico 10, Abejo 9, Saralu 8, Quitugua 4, Ichihara 4, Agustin 2, Reyes 2.

MCS 43 — Yu 13, Yun 13, Quitugua 9, Richardson 8.

Scoring by quarters: 26-22, 52-43.

WEDNESDAY
First Game
Ol’Aces Elite 42 — Abejo 9, Gaviola 9, Saralu 7, Quitugua 7, Elchico 6, Peters 2.

Sonics XVIII 34 — Paragados 18, Malasarte 6, Bernardo 6, Diyco 2.

Scoring by halves: 23-15, 42-34.

Mariana Variety stole the victory from Arianne Fish Mart, 86-85, during the lone game played in the 2017 San Antonio Summer Basketball League last Saturday at the San Antonio court.

Melvin Villarin hit the dagger—a triple that was his only basket in the match. Villarin knocked in the shot of the night from the left key in front of their bench with the ball hitting nothing but the bottom of the net.

After his back-breaking trey, Arianne Fish Mart was left with two seconds to pull up for a shot and Ken Viray did manage to take the last attempt. However, his alley-oop shot rimmed out.

It was a sorry loss for Arianne Fish Mart as it led in the majority of the game with Viray taking charge and getting support from Paulo Sanguyo and Ramon Mungcal.

Viray and Muncal combined for 15 points in the first quarter to give Arianne Market a 22-16 advantage. Marianas Variety kept Arianne Fish Mart within striking distance at the end of the opening canto, thanks to Ivan Devero’s 5 straight points.

Devero was still on target in the second quarter, but failed to get help from his teammates, while Viray and company spread the wealth to retain the driver’s seat at the break, 47-39.

Arianne Fish Mart’s lead was then sliced to 3 going into the final canto, 62-65, as Devero was still unstoppable while his teammates slowly started to contribute on offense. Then in the fourth quarter, Devero found an ally in Prince Factor to keep Marianas Variety in the game, but their efforts were overshadowed by the triple of Villarin, who made the most out of his limited minutes by converting the long jumper.

Deverop top-scored for Marianas Variety with his 38 points, while Factor chipped in 17. Viray led Arianne Fish Mart with his 25 markers, while Mungcal and Sanguyo added 18 and 16, respectively.

Marianas Variety 86 — Devero 38, F. Factor 17, Pineda 8, Supetron 6, Manibusan 4, Standish 4, A. Factor 4, Villarin 3, Babauta 2.

Arianne Fish Mart 85 — Viray 25, Mungcal 18, Sanguyo 16, Inos 9, Paraiso 8, Mangali 6, Guiang 3.

Scoring by quarters: 16-22, 39-47, 62-65, 86-85.

Double victories for Sonics

The 670 Sonics PHI’s Khristian Itaas soars for a layup against a Kagman Rollers defender during the second half of their boys U15 division game in the Diaz youth caging last Saturday at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium. (Roselyn B. Monroyo)

It was a fruitful weekend for the Sonics, as the group’s two teams won their respective games in the 2017 Francisco M. Diaz Memorial Youth League at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.

In the boys U18 division match last Friday, the 670 Sonics XVI whipped the Ol’Aces Extreme, 63-44, while in the boys U15 game last Saturday, the 670 Sonics PHI had a similar easy victory against the Kagman Rollers, 48-25.

The 670 Sonics PHI held Kagman to four field goals and 9 points in the first half to set up the 23-point winning margin.

While Kagman struggled on its offense, 670 Sonics PHI had little problems hitting its target as Clarenz Contreras and Khristian Itaas teamed up in giving their squad the needed points. The duo nearly matched the output of the entire Kagman crew as Contreras registered 14 points and the lefty Itaas chipped in 10.

Contreras dropped 8 of his total markers in the first half to lift 670 Sonics PHI to a 25-9 halftime edge. Itaas, on the other hand, recorded all his points in the second half, including 7 straight markers past the halfway mark of the final 20 minutes of play.

In the boys U18 division, the 670 Sonics XVI broke away in the second half after clinging to a 14-12 lead at halftime. Center Jester Kintaro anchored the 670 Sonics XVI’s strong showing in the final frame after drilling all his 10 points in that period. Rafael Ordona and Sean Apasan then provided support to Kintaro after combining for 14 markers.

In other results last weekend, the Natibu Warriors eked out a 52-50 victory over the Kagman Rollers in their boys U18 tiff, while the Junior Ol’Aces edged the Ol’Aces in the women’s division, 47-41.

Analei Santos and Mary Kay Alferos scored 8 of the Junior Ol’Aces last 10 points to power their team to the 6-point win. Alferos ended up with 16 markers, while Santos chipped in 15. Chevy Kate Alipio had 11 points on a losing effort for the Ol’Aces.

In the Natibu-Kagman game, the former also leaned on two players in the homestretch to take the close win.

Henry Aguon and Jeff Omar teamed up in Natibu’s last 8 points with the former making 5 and the latter adding 3. They split their free throws in the closing minute to keep Natibu in the lead. Aguon top-scored for Natibu with his 12 points, while Aaron Ogumoro paced Kagman with his 19 markers.

Kang stamps his class in boys U12 singles

Daniel Kang capped his domination in the boys U12 age group with a title win in the 2017 CNMI Junior Tennis Championships.

The top-ranked Kang swept the unseeded Jiwoong Kwon in the finals yesterday, 6-2, 6-0, at the American Memorial Park, to bag his third singles crown in the division in the final local tournament of the 2016-2017 season. Kang’s first two boys U12 singles titles were from in the 8th Annual Tan Holdings Tennis Classic (against Anthony Gregoire) in November last year and the 2017 White Coconut Tennis Classic (opposite Richard Steele). In the NMITA-organized 2017 Junior Fun Tennis Tournament, Kang opted to join the U14 singles contest and also won in the finals against Steele, giving the former a 4-for-4 performance in the championship round.

Kang moved a win away from clinching his third straight boys U12 singles title after eliminating the No. 3 seed Jae Yun Jung in the semifinals last Saturday, 6-1, 6-1. Kwon, who stunned the No. 2 seed Gregoire in the Week 1, pulled off another upset last weekend after downing No. 4 Andrew Chung in the other Final Four pairing, 6-4, 6-3. Chung eventually had to settle for fourth place after Jung won their battle for third, 6-4, 6-3.

Meanwhile, two more No. 1 seed players also ruled their respective divisions.

The favored Robbie Schorr earned the boys U18 singles title after easing past Michael Ren in yesterday’s finale, 6-1, 6-2. Ren, who was unranked in the tournament, foiled a title showdown between the Top 2 seeds in the division when he surprised No. 2 Vince Tudela with a 6-3, 7-6 (7) semis victory. The other semis game between Schorr and Ken Song went the distance with the former eking out a 6-0, 3-6, 6-4 win. Song eventually joined Schorr and Ren in the podium after sweeping Tudela in the consolation match, 6-4, 6-0.

In the boys U14 singles, Sean Lee did not drop a single set in the competition en route to the championship win in the division. The top-ranked Lee claimed the title yesterday after a 6-2, 6-0 triumph versus No. 2 Sam Ryu. Lee’s two other victories were against Seong Eon Heo, 6-0, 6-0, and Eugene Park, 6-0, 6-1.

Ryu, on the other hand, eliminated Hyunmin Cho, 6-0, 6-1, and Richard Steele, 7-5, 6-2, to earn the right to face Lee in the finals. Steele rounded out the Top 3 in the boys U14 singles after a come-from-behind 3-6, 6-3, 12-10 win over Park yesterday.

After taking home the boys U14 singles title victory last Sunday morning, Lee returned to the AMP courts in the afternoon to get the boys U16 singles championship. He was also unbeaten in the round-robin contest, gaining the division crown after shutting down Seong Bin Heo yesterday, 6-0, 6-0. Lee’s other win was recorded in Week 1 against Ken Xue, 6-1, 6-1.

TanHoldings Football Club escaped with an important 1-0 victory over rival MP United FC in the final regular season game in the boys U17 division of the 2017 NMIFA Youth Spring League last Saturday at the Hopwood Middle School Field.

The win put TanHoldings in a tie for first place with MP United as the two teams ended the double-round robin competition with similar 7-0-1 win-draw-loss records. A playoff game will be held to decide the winner of the division title and the organizing Northern Mariana Islands Football Association has yet to announce the date of the rubber.

MP United, which only needed a draw to defend its spring title, failed to shut the door on TanHoldings after giving up a goal to Mark Esalan just four minutes into the second half.

Esalan beat three MP United defenders to the ball and with the TanHoldings player sprinting ahead of their opponents, goalie Clayton Izuka was forced to leave his spot and tried to dive for the ball to prevent the former from kicking the leather. However, Izuka lost his footing a bit and fell on the ground without his hand on the ball, while Esalan jumped over the MP United goalie and kicked the ball in.

Esalan was then mobbed by his teammates as he ended TanHoldings’ frustration. Esalan, in the early part of the 40-minute second half, attempted to score twice, but was denied by Izuka on both occasions. Then in the first half, TanHoldings players were a bit gun shy as even though they had open looks for a shot, they opted to make extra passes, which they could not turn into goals, as MP United’s defense had already set up. TanHoldings made a couple of attempts and did not succeed, as Izuka held his ground and caught the ball, leaving both teams scoreless in the first half.

In the second half, TanHoldings sensed the urgency to score with the season on the line. Esalan anchored the squad’s offense, using his speed to break away from his defenders and his persistence eventually paid off in the 44th minute.

Now down, MP United began to be more aggressive on offense and had several opportunities to score. Sunjoon Tenorio went for headers three times and missed, while the rest of MP United players also struggled to score. TanHoldings, on the other hand, focused more on defense after Esalan’s conversation and it also wisely melted the clock to protect the shaky lead.

Meanwhile, Paire FC avoided a shutout this season after beating Matansa, 6-4, in its last game in the division.

Dai Podziewski knocked in a pair of goals for Paire, which wrapped up the competition with a 1-1-6 record. Ja Min Elliot, Lukesh Lama, Rex De Jose, and George Sokarev chipped in one goal apiece in Paire’s good finish.

Matansa, which also ended the season with a 1-1-6 card, drew one goal each from Joshua De Leon and Justin Charles Achas. Matansa and Paire fell behind Kanoa FC in the final team standings as the latter held a 2-2-4 slate.

Junior golfer Dong Young Lee topped the Championship Flight in the 21st Hyatt Regency Saipan Charity Golf Classic held last Saturday at the Laolao Bay Golf & Resort.

Lee was the runaway winner in the six-player field after scoring a net 64.6. He posted the third best gross in his division at 7-over par 79 and had a handicap of 14.4, making him the only player in the Championship Flight to register a net score lower than 70. His net score was also the best in the entire competition.
The junior golfer, who just last month ruled the NMC golf tournament at the same venue, defeated veterans Freddie Cataluna (net 72), Guam’s Daryl Poe (72.8), Joung Hoon Park (73.6) and Seung San Choi (74), and Laolao instructor Harry Nakamura (74.6).

In the Ladies Flight, Lorrained Babauta lorded it over 14 other female players after carding a net 73.8. The 7.2 handicapper shot a gross 81—which was the best in the division, tying Yuko Togawa. The former champion Togawa missed the Top 3 as she landed at No. 6 after logging a net 76.2, while Matilde Hocog and Shiori Onoue joined Babauta in the podium. Hocog was the runner-up after firing a net 73.8 (105 gross minus the 31.2 handicap), while Onoue finished third with her 74.2 (91 gross and 16.8 handicap).

Meanwhile, the champions in other divisions were A Flight’s Yong Jao Kim, B Flight’s Patrick Guerrero, C Flight’s Scott Berkland, and Senior Flight’s Joe “Kamikaze” Camacho.

The 4.8 handicapper Camacho had the best gross in the entire tournament with his 3-over par 75 and his net 70.2 topped the 15-player Senior Flight. Dennis Williams and Eun Teack Jung claimed the runner-up honors with the former ranked second after recording a net 72.8 and the latter third with his 74.6.

In the crowded C Flight, which drew 62 participants, Berkland stood out with his net 67, thanks to a 40 handicap that was deducted from his gross score of 107. Albert Pajarillaga (net 68.2) and Joaquin Deleon Guerrero (68.6) joined Berkland in the Top 3.

In the A Flight, the podium finishers all scored lower than 70. Kim posted a gross 83 and with his 16.8 handicap, he ended up with a net 66.2. Enoch Lim also registered a gross 83, but his 14.4 handicap gave him a net 68.6 for the runner-up honors, while William Retardo took the third seat with his net 69.8 (89 gross score minus 19.2 handicap).

In the B Flight, the Top 3 winners also had net scores in the 60s with Guerrero tallying 69.4 for a close win against Edgar Abalos (69.6). Danny Son matched Abalos’ net score, but dropped to third place after losing in the scorecard tiebreak.

Proceeds from last weekend’s tournament will be donated to Make-A-Wish Foundation, Kagman High School Million Dollar Club, Marianas Behavioral Health International, Karidat, Empty Vessel Ministry Foundation, and the Northern Marianas Humanities Council.

Kagman notched its third win in Division B of the 2017 Dove Women’s Spring League after nosing out Kanoa Football Club, 1-0, last Sunday at the Chacha Oceanview Middle School Field.

Britanny Hodge scored the lone goal in the match in the 24th minute to help Kagman remain at the top half of the team standings in their division. Kagman is in second place with its 3-0-2 win-draw-loss record, behind the undefeated Shirley’s Football Club (6-0-0) and ahead of MP United (2-2-0), Paire (0-3-3), and Kanoa (0-1-6).

Hodge’s goal was Kagman’s sixth in the season and with the team shutting down Kanoa, the winning squad has only given up five in the competition so far.

The division-leading Shirley’s has the most goals with 18, as it added three to its tally last Sunday after defeating Paire. Jaibelle Nelmida, Marilou Arriola, and Lillian Podziewski scored for Shirley’s in the final game last weekend.

Podziewski came back from her stint with the CNMI U15 Girls National Team in the EAFF U15 Girls Tournament 2017 held at the Jinshan Sports Center in Shanghai, China last week and handed Shirley’s a goal in the 38th minute. Seventh minutes earlier, it was Arriola who lit up the board for Shirley’s, while Nelmida gave the squad a 1-0 halftime lead after finding the back of the net in the eighth minute.

With Shirley’s blanking Paire, the former has yet to yield a single goal this season, while the latter has made only two and allowed eight.

Meanwhile, MP United-TanHoldings prevailed against Shirley’s FC, 5-1, in the lone Division A game played last weekend.

Gillian Villagomez and Chloe Salvosa knocked in two goals apiece for MP United-TanHoldings, while Britanny Wally chipped in one. Villagomez started things out for MPU-TanHoldings with his shot in the fifth minute, while Salvosa also hit her target early with her goal in the ninth minute.

Marielle Gariguez gave Shirley’s its only goal in the 19th minute to cut the deficit to one, but MP United-TanHoldings got the goal back, thanks to Britanny’s conversion in the 28th minute. MP United-TanHoldings went to add two more goals to its total with Villagomez getting her second goal in the 44th minute and Salvosa doing the same two minutes later.

After the easy victory, MP United-TanHoldings now has a 3-1-3 record for second place in the team standings, while Shirley’s is still at the cellar with its 0-2-6. Paire remains on top with its 6-1-0 slate, while Kanoa (3-0-3) is ranked third.

Paire and Kanoa were supposed to play in last Sunday’s first match in Division A, however both parties agreed to reschedule the game as neither team had enough players to start the duel.

Go See Mark still spotless

Go See Mark stays on course for a perfect record in the regular season of the 2017 Saipan Baseball League following another win last week at the Francisco “Tan Ko” Palacios Ballfield.

GSM downed the Comets last Thursday, 9-6, for the former’s 11th victory in as many games—just three triumphs away from a sweep in the two-round robin elimination. The league-leading squad was gunning for win No. 12 last night against the defending champion Chalan Kanoa Bears, while GSM’s last two matches will be versus the BSI Aces (May 4) and the D-9ers (May 10).

A five-run inning at the bottom of the first gave GSM the driver’s seat and it protected its lead after shutting down the Comets in the last three innings. GSM got two runs off the Comets’ errors, one each off a wild pitch and fielder’s choice, while Ricardo Dela Cruz gave the former’s its fifth run when he reached off Pat Alepuyo’s sacrifice fly.

GSM then added two more runs in the fourth inning and one each in the sixth and seventh, while the Comets had only two in the first inning and one apiece in the third and fourth. Two more runs at the top of the sixth inning kept the Comets in the game. However, the Comets fell short in the end after going 1-2-3 in the seventh and ninth and finishing the eighth with two runners stranded as GSM closer Kevin Kapileo got the third out after fanning out the former’s fourth batter.

Diego Camacho, Anthony Tenorio, and Tyrone Omar scored two runs each in GSM’s victory over the Comets.

In other results last week, the Blue Jays finally broke into the win column after going 0-9 following their 8-5 triumph against the D-9ers last Tuesday.

Shortstop Virgil Secharmidal towed the Blue Jays to victory after going 4-for-6 at bat and scoring three runs. Russell Hocog, James Benavente, Ben Flores, Davy Matagolai, and Chris George also helped the Blue Jays’ cause, contributing one RBI each.

The Blue Jays were behind, 0-2, after two complete innings, but managed to recover and grab the lead as they scored in the next six innings.

Titanium was also without a run in the first two innings of its game against the Chalan Kanoa Bears last Wednesday, but was able to find its rhythm later to stun the defending champion.

A RBI single from Nathan Camacho at the bottom of the third broke the ice for Titanium, which tamed the Bears in the first five innings. The Bears then tied the match at the top of the sixth as Marvin Kaipat reached off a Titanium error, however the latter countered with four runs at the bottom to regain the upper hand and kept it to gain win No. 4.

The Bears missed as chance to extend the game when their two runners were left stranded at first and third base as Titanium booted out the defending champion’s last three batters. Nathan Camacho caught an infield fly from A.J. Lizama, while Jon Cabrera also grabbed a fly from Jose Lizama at centerfield. The Bears’ Kiku Lizama was called for a fly out too earlier for the first out.

Armatech won its debut in the 2017 San Antonio Summer Basketball League after dominating 5-Star Construction, 67-50, last Friday at the San Antonio court.

Armatech led from start to finish and was never threatened to break into the win column in the 14-team field in its first try.

Jerome Malasarte and Mark Asuhan teamed up in putting Armatech on top of the game right in the opening canto as the former scored 9 points and the latter chipped in 6. The duo’s total points were enough to outgun the entire 5-Star crew and gave Armatech an early double-digit advantage, 19-8.

5-Star picked up its scoring a bit in the second quarter, however Armatech kept its safe distance, as Michael Babauta took over from Asuhan and Malasarte, making 8 points in that period.

Babauta then remained on target in the second half to power Armatech to its debut win. He recorded a game-high 20 points, while Malasarte and Asuhan also finished in twin digits wit 17 and 10, respectively.

Meanwhile, in the first game, SSFM eased past Kagman, 99-87

SSFM had a jackrabbit start, exploding for 31 points for a promising 19-point lead at the end of the first period. Kagman fell behind early as it had no player scoring more than one field goal in the opening canto, while SSFM had many players converting multiple baskets.

After a slow start, Kagman found its rhythm and scored 29 points in the second quarter. However, it failed to neutralize SSFM’s gunners and Kagman ended up still down by double-figures by halftime, 44-55.

SSFM went on to protect its safe lead in the entire second half despite another rally from Kagman in the fourth and last quarter.

Jack Lizama led three other SSFM players in scoring twin digits with his 17 points. Dan Barcinas chipped in 16, while Lester Babauta and Andrew Ashburn tallied 15 and 11, respectively. Trevor Ogumoro had 19 points in another losing effort for Kagman.

SSFM 99 — Lizama 17, Barcinas 16, Babauta 15, Ashburn 11, Palino 9, Echavez 6, Kapileo 6, Raho 6, Daniel 6, Santos 6.
Kagman 87 — Ogumoro 19, R. Babauta 13, Pangelinan 13, Martin 12, B. Babauta 9, Limes 5, Faisao 4, Camacho 2, Palacios 2.
Scoring by quarters: 31-12, 55-41, 75-57, 99-87.

Second Game
Armatech 67 — Babauta 20, J. Malasarte 17, Asuhan 10, Chavez 8, B. Malasarte 4, Zapata 4, Tolosa 2.
5-Star 50 — Castillo 19, Ponce 12, Banal 9, Pino 8, Ocampo 2.

The Braves’ chances of getting the top honors in the batting race are looking good as five of their players are in the Top 10 in the Junior League division of the 2017 Saipan Little League Baseball.

Vicente Camacho is ranked first with his batting average of .517 (as of April 9), while his teammates J.P. Celis, Josenio Alvarez, Leve’Que Iguel, and Kyle Kapileo, are in second, fourth, seventh, and eighth place, respectively. Camacho went 15-for-29 at bat and is the lone player in the batting race to average at least .500. Celis’ .441 of his 15-for-34 performance at the plate put him in second place, while Alvarez earned an average of .423 after going 11-for-26. The Enforcers’ Thomas Agulto is in third spot with his batting average of .428 (12-for-28).

Iguel and Kapileo have batting averages of .490 (9-for-22) and .400 (10-for-25), respectively, just a few percentage behind No. 5 and the Ol’Aces’ Trevor Lieto (.419/13-for-31) and the Enforcers’ Sean Rabauliman (.416/10-for-24).

With Iguel, Kapileo, Celis, Alvarez and Camacho in the Top 10, the Braves have the most players in the Top 20. The Ol’Aces, Falcons, and Enforcers have four each, while the Comets have three.

Rounding out the Top 20 are the Comets’ A.J. Sanchez (.393), the Falcons’ Isaiah Teigita (.391), the Comets’ Reid Teregeyo (.384) and Sebastian Saures (.379), the Ol’Aces’ Kiana Aldan (.360), the Enforcers’ Justin Agulto (.360), the Falcons’ Nixon Smith (.346), the Ol’Aces’ Nathan Aizon (.346), the Enforcers’ Mingko Taimanao (.333), the Falcons’ Froilan Camacho (.333), the Ol’Aces Henry Fleming (.321), and the Falcons’ Joel Norita (.310). The batting leaders were based on 21 or more times at bat.

In the pitching race, a Braves player is also on top with Camacho having a 0.43 ERA to lead four others. He allowed only one run in 15.1 innings pitched. The Comets’ Vincent Nakamura is at second place with his 0.80 ERA (3 runs allowed in 25.1 innings), followed by Norita (0.84), Celis (0.91), and the Falcons’ Aven Evangelista (0.93).

Meanwhile, Nakamura is ahead in the strikeouts category with his 35, while Celis and Norita are ranked second with 33 each. Evangelista has the most runs so far with 17, while Sanchez (8), Vicente Camacho (3), and Saures (5) lead in the RBIs, triples, and doubles, respectively. In the home run category, only Froilan Camacho and Tarrence Babauta have rounded the bases (once).

Isabel Heras serves to Malika Miyawaki during their girls U18 singles game in the 2017 CNMI Junior Tennis Championships last week at the American Memorial Park tennis courts. (Roselyn B. Monroyo)

Isabel Heras had a repeat in the 2017 CNMI Junior Tennis Championships after beating Tania Tan in their girls U18 singles duel, 6-4, 6-2, last Sunday at the American Memorial Park tennis courts.

Heras, who clinched the division crown in the same competition in 2016 after outlasting Asia Raulerson in the finals, 6-2, 5-7, 6-0, successfully defended her title after earning a perfect 3-0 mark in last weekend’s round-robin contest. She and Tan came into last Sunday’s match unbeaten in two games and Heras went on to keep her spotless record after sweeping the latter.

Both Heras and Tan won against Grace Choi and Malika Miyawaki in Week 1 of the tournament to make their meeting last Sunday the title-deciding match. The girls U18 championship in Northern Mariana Islands Tennis Association’s last junior local tournament for the 2016-2017 calendar was Heras second for the season as she also won the division crown in the 8th TanHoldings Tennis Classic against Miyawaki and Tan.

Meanwhile, the other singles events in the girls division had new winners in Hye Jin Elliot and Maria Gregoire.

Gregoire took the girls U14 single tiara after prevailing in her head-to-head showdown with Riko Ojima, 6-2, 6-2.

Elliot, on the other hand, ruled the seven-player girls U12 singles field, clinching the division title by stunning the No.1 seed and last year’s U10 champion JC Ferrer. Elliot caught Ferrer flatfooted in the opening set and cruised to a 6-1 victory. However, Ferrer fought back in the second set and defeated Elliot in similar scores to stay in contention. Then in the deciding super-tiebreaker third set, Elliot recovered and recorded a 10-5 victory to complete the upset.

The eventual girls U12 champion was unseeded in her division and advanced to the finals after surprising No. 2 Anika Camacho with a 6-4, 6-3 victory and eliminating Yejin Son, 6-2, 6-2. Son played in the consolation round, but fell short in her bid for a podium finish after Helen Kim won the battle for third place, 6-3, 3-6, 10-5.

In other results, Hoo Wang and La Hun Lam topped their respective divisions, while Robbie Schorr and Ken Song ruled the boys U18 doubles category.

La Hun went unbeaten (2-0) in the boys U10 singles, which had a round-robin format. He secured the championship after downing Nason Wessel last Sunday, 8-3. La Hun’s other victory was against Sam Cope (walkover) last Saturday.

In the girls U10 singles, Wang spoiled a double celebration for the Lams, as the former defeated the latter’s sister last Sunday, La Mee, 8-4. Wang finished the competition with a 3-0 record, while La Mee had a 2-1 mark to settle for the runner-up honors. Soarin Oh, who won over Dana Lee, 9-7, placed third.

Schorr, who reigned supreme in the boys U18 singles, added the doubles championship to his growing collection after he and Song outclassed Steven Goodwin and Vince Tudela last Sunday, 6-3, 7-5. Schorr and Song were undefeated in two games in the round-robin contest as they also swept Andy Cho and James Kim, 6-0, 6-0, while Tudela and Goodwin had a 1-1 mark to finish second.
